Please feel free to contact me directly. It would be useful to know a bit more about the intended use for the XML data. There are currently three means of generating XML from EmbARK. 1) Report writer - I have created a few report templates that allow you to save data in XML (including CDWA Lite). By using the report writer, you can take advantage of advanced scripting tools to embed considerable logic to finesse the output. 2) EmbARK Web Kiosk - EmbARK Web Kiosk 7 has customizable templates enabling the publication of any XML format (this is what Marla is using at SFMOMA). The XML may be harvested using SRU (Search and Retrieval by URL). You can load a URL at any time to access the data set you need (or configure that URL into an application that would harvest the data). 3) COBOAT - As Ben mentioned below, you can use COBOAT to automatically extract data from EmbARK and generate XML. COBOAT simply requires that you create an ODBC data source for EmbARK. The templates are quite customizable -- I have already configured them for CDWA Lite. The XML can be saved as text files or loaded to an OAI-PMH Server. Hope that is helpful. In particular, our file format identification, validation and metadata extraction tools should work with a broad range of formats and genres. There are a number of these file tools in existence, but none of these tools individually can both support a wide range of formats and extract the technical metadata necessary to fully characterize digital content. In the fall of 2008 Harvard University Library began development on the File Information Tool Set (FITS) in response to this need. FITS acts as a wrapper around multiple open source file format identification, validation and metadata extraction tools. FITS invokes and manages the output of these tools. The native output from these tools is converted into a common format, "FITS XML", compared to one another and consolidated into a single XML output file. The tools currently wrapped by FITS are: * JHOVE * Exiftool from Phil Harvey * National Library of New Zealand Metadata Extractor * DROID from the UK National Archives * Ffident from Marco Schmidt * File Utility In addition, FITS includes two original tools: FileInfo and XmlMetadata. There are a number of tools that will be evaluated for incorporation into FITS in the future, including: * Apache Tika * JHOVE 2 * Aduna Aperture * MediaInfo FITS is written in Java and is compatible with Java 1.5 or higher. FITS can be invoked by its command-line interface or through its Java API. FITS produces a ?status? value for each format identification it makes. When the status is SINGLE_RESULT, all tools that were able to identify the format agree on the file?s format. When the status is CONFLICT, there is more than one purported format identified for the file. Because FITS combines the output of multiple tools it has to be able to handle conflicts among the tool?s output when they don?t agree. It handles this conflict in many ways: * Tool output is normalized before it is compared for conflicts. For example, one tool might report for a file format that it is ?PNG?, while another tool may output it as ?Portable Network Graphics?. In another example, one tool might output the resolution unit as ?2?; another tool might output it as ?inches?. These values are normalized in the XSLT file that converts the tool?s native output to FITS XML before the FITS XML for each tool is compared to each other. * Users configure a tool ordering preference. In cases of format identification conflicts, the format identified by the preferred tools will determine the format FITS reports. * Tools can be excluded from reporting on particular formats and/or on particular metadata elements if its output is found in testing to be incorrect or buggy. This is very useful for incorporating a tool into FITS because it is good at some things without having to accept known unreliable information from the tool. * FITS consults a configurable ?format tree? to know when two reported formats for a file are not really conflicts because one of the formats is a more specific form of the other format. For example the format tree documents that the OpenDocument Text format is a more specific form of the Zip format. If a file is identified as being in both of these formats by FITS tools it is not reported as a conflict because technically they are both correct. Instead the more specific format, OpenDocument Text, is reported as the format. FITS is available to the public under the LGPL license. Harvard University Library (HUL) plans to use FITS in production in 2010 within its ingest service, but is making an early release of it available now for testing at http://fits.googlecode.com. Additional tools are being written at HUL to convert FITS XML into MIX, textMD, documentMD and other technical metadata schemas. We invite you to download and try using FITS. Any issues using it can be reported on the FITS website on the Issues web page (http://code.google.com/p/fits/issues/list). As Heather says, Twitter being a rolling stream of stuff that floats across your UI it doesn't really make sense to ask "how many people read each tweet"; all the same, the original question included the aim of knowing "what time of day people pay the most attention to us" and I'm guessing that there might at least be services out there that can tell you what time of day your followers have their various twitter clients on (or are visiting twitter on the web). No guarantee that they'll read your tweet, of course, but if it's sent when they have their client open they're more likely to attend to it. And of course the other thing you could do is put a call to action into each tweet and track that - perhaps a short URL. bit.ly has great stats, for example, and if you only seed twitter with a particular short URL and use another one elsewhere you could track the impact of that original tweet. Perhaps. Keep us posted if you come across anything useful, John! Cheers, Jeremy ________________________________ From: mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu on behalf of Sterbenk, Yvette M. If someone has something larger, we'll put it on an ftp site or our website and encourage the end user to download from there. We had the excellent opportunity to transition our users to this policy about 4 years ago when an internal user had created a 120mb powerpoint of images from a staff party and sent it to all the internal staff. The email system in place at that time creating a copy for each user, tried to deliver to everyone, and then thoroughly hosed the disk space and processor utilization. It took about three days to recover from the incident but gave me the cover to upgrade the mail system and give our users a direct reason to understand the 'why' behind the policy. -bw. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Bruce Wyman, Director of Technology Denver Art Museum / 100 W 14th Ave. Pkwy, Denver, CO 80204 office: 720.913.0159 / fax: 720.913.0002 From hanan at mada.org.il Fri Aug 7 11:35:51 2009 From: hanan at mada.org.il (Hanan Cohen) Date: Fri, 7 Aug 2009 21:35:51 +0300 Subject: [MCN-L] Twitter Analytics References: <4A7BE3FE.50A4.0031.0@artsmia.org> Message-ID: <38A562F9B9615940BD347797ACD838C81BDD7B@server.mada.com> Use http://bit.ly to shorten the URLs in your tweets and get click statistics for each URL. THE REEL THING TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM A special 22nd edition of The Reel Thing Technical Symposium will be held in Los Angeles on August 21-22, 2009 at the Linwood Dunn Theater at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in Hollywood, California Hosted by the Association of Moving Images (AMIA) and dedicated to presenting the latest technologies in audiovisual restoration and preservation, The Reel Thing brings together a unique line up of laboratory technicians, format experts, and preservationists. The program includes two days of sessions and screenings including the premiere screening of Walt Disney's digital restoration of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", the premiere of the digital restoration of Marilyn Monroe's "How to Marry a Millionaire," presented in CinemaScope, and a surprise sneak preview of a restored classic. Registration details and more information on the program are at: www.the-reel-thing.org REGISTER NOW! Highlights include: Restoration of the Apollo 11 EVA Footage During this presentation, the system used to capture the extravehicular activity on video during Apollo 11 will be reviewed as well as the process for broadcasting those first live pictures from the moon. NASA's search for the original telemetry tapes which recorded the feed from the moon, and the best surviving elements will also be profiled. A discussion will ensue about the technical and philosophical factors that are guiding the restoration project itself, and how these new restoration capabilities may apply to other genres of moving images. Finally, before and after sequences of images from the ongoing restoration project will be screened in HD resolution. Reclaiming the 'Lost' Lunar Orbiter Survey Photos Early this year, headlines blared the news that backup tapes of the first satellite optical surveys of the moon - long thought to have been lost - had been found and decoded to gorgeous new prints which contained more than twice the resolution of the "official" versions done long ago. This presentation will concentrate on the photographic mission to the moon, how it was conceived and executed, how the 2" instrumentation tapes, which only vaguely resemble quad videotape recordings, came to be made (but until now never used) and what was required to bring success to a project which many thought would be impossible or too expensive to pull off. Resolution Limitations of Film Scanners: More Pixels Do Not Mean More Resolution Includes a discussion of the "4K" versus "2K" debate and future "8K" systems currently under development. Adieu, Sweet Apparition. Hello Sweetheart - Get Me Rewrite! David Giovannoni will discuss recent discoveries and introduce new old sounds. He'll describe the technical challenges of evoking sound from primitive recordings made to be seen, not heard. And he'll recount how the inventor's own voice was revealed after posing for a year as the phantasm of a young woman. After the DI - How to Organize, Catalogue and Protect the Original Negative. About 80% of studio films are now finished as Digital Intermediates and many of these films are still shot on film, or a hybrid of film and digital. For archiving, it makes sense to have a plan to extract, separate and store the actual shots used in the creation of the DI. Content owners may wish to go back to the most original elements from production, for restoration or other reasons. This presentation will cover an efficient and methodical plan for archiving of the original camera negative. Electronic Archiving: Lessons from 8 years in the "DI Trenches." This presentation will focus on the real issues encountered by someone who has been living Digital Intermediate archiving since the inception of DI. The presentation focuses on what really happens when facilities and DI studios try to deal with archiving Petabytes of data. TYPE A Videotape and THE EVERLY BROTHERS The restoration of "Johnny Cash Presents the Everly Brothers Show"-an early 70's TV series that exist only on obsolete type A videotape copies-presented technical challenges far in excess of ordinary video restoration. Archiving, Preserving and Distributing Digital Cinema Collections After three years of work, the original EDCINE approach - based on open standards (as MXF, JPEG2000 and OAIS), a flexible and modular structure and on new standardised profiles for long term preservation - resulted in a 'proof of concept', a working prototype of the 'EDCINE Digital Archive System'. Challenges of Restoring Classic Films in 4K Presentation featuring examples from 4K workflows of restoration projects at Motion Picture Imaging for such films as The Wizard of Oz, North by Northwest, A Star is Born and Gone With the Wind. However, our advanced search form DOES have instructions (or "tips"): http://collection.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/advancedSearch.page.do (which pops up in a new window). As you'll probably work out soon enough, some of the "search tips" are only necessary because of the rather strange way our collection database works. Eg: "Spelling needs to match our records exactly; there will be no results for near-matches. For example, you will get no results if you type Tracy Moffat rather than Tracey Moffatt. However, you can use part words but you must enter more than one word. For example, you can type in Trac* Mof* for Tracey Moffatt, but you will get no results if you type just Trac OR just Mof." [* Actually, simple search also searches accession number (eg: "130.1975") - for those people who want ONE particular work and happen to know the acc. no. already.] Regards, Jonathan Cooper Manager of information / website Art Gallery of New South Wales Art Gallery Road, Sydney NSW 2000 AUSTRALIA http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au +61 2 9225 1796 / (02) 9225 1796 mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu wrote on 11/08/2009 03:58:38 AM: > Dear fellow MCNers - > > I'm in the process of writing a How-To for our new collection online > site and I was wondering if anyone had written an extensive set of > instructions for how to use it? Duffy 08-10-2009 http://www.law.com/jsp/law/LawArticleFriendly.jsp?id=1202432899599 In the movies, it seems that monsters are always up to no good -- making mayhem or setting fires. But in a federal court in Philadelphia last week, a couple dozen movie monsters made some important new law and set a few significant precedents in the area of copyrights and trademarks that will help to define the doctrine of "fair use" for years to come. In Warren Publishing Co. v. Spurlock, the publisher of several popular movie monster magazines from the 1950s and '60s claimed that its copyrights and trademarks were violated by a recently published book that chronicles the art of a man whose paintings appeared on more than 50 of its magazine covers. But lawyers for J. David Spurlock and Vanguard Productions -- the publishers of the book, "Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos" -- argued that their inclusion of the magazine covers was protected by the fair use doctrine because the main purpose of the book was to celebrate the art of Gogos, a purpose far different from the goal that the magazine publisher had. U.S. District Judge Michael M. Baylson agreed, finding that there was a "transformative nature" to the use of Gogos' paintings in the book because it was designed to be a biography and retrospective of an artist who had created dozens of memorable images of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and other staples of classic monster movies. I am the official Twitter-er, but I hand over those duties from time to time to any staff member who wishes to be the staff Tweeter for the week. A variety of folks use our Flickr account for posting collection images and curated projects. I'm currently the only person who uploads to our YouTube account, but I'm open to that changing. Facebook is supposed to be in the hands of the marketing department, but it could use a bit of encouragement. And any staff member or intern who wishes to blog may do so, but I do the copy and content editing before it's published. We've been going this way for little over a year now, without strict guidelines, with no incident. I do put down some groundrules regarding tone of voice (casual, but professional, and if you use internet-speak, spam people, or are otherwise obnoxious, I'm yanking your access), and obviously nothing confidential, but confidentiality and appropriate conduct is generally agreed to at time of hiring (we all have to sign a confidentiality agreement). I think there's a nice balance that can be had, but it does require some trust in your staff and a few groundrules laid out at the outset. If we're reproducing an artist's or photographer's work as a big enlargement as part of an exhibtion wall design, we're using that work, in the full sense of the word. We're doing something with it. And we'll get permission and pay. But if we're reproducing something as a small reference image on a wall label -- small on small, let's call it, and definitely didactic -- then we often won't. We've never had a problem resulting from this policy. On the other hand, we've recently been asked to pay $2260 to reproduce a short quotation (in two languages) from a long poem as part of an exhibition wall design. For most organizations these days, component content is achieved by using DITA, the Darwin Information Typing Architecture. Paul Wlodarczyk of Earley & Associates will explore the metadata capabilities within DITA and component content management systems, discuss two major benefits that can be achieved by using descriptive metadata and taxonomy, and recommend some best practices for getting started with metadata for component-oriented content. Erik Hennum, Michael Harris, and Robert Berry of IBM will follow with a discussion on IBM's processes for classifying content using these tools and developing applications that use this metadata to provide real end-user value and significant efficiency improvements for content developers. They will highlight the value of DITA-based approaches to taxonomy by discussing key features of the specialization and examine some of the uses of DITA-based metadata. I think common sense is the key, but as Perian points out, not everyone agrees on what "appropriate" is. One thing we've found successful with our Facebook page is to have a group approach to developing the posts. We have 5 staff people working on the page. If one of us has an idea, we e-mail it to the group. We are all good at responding pretty immediately. If one or more of the group members agrees it's a good post, we go ahead with the posting. We actually work pretty quickly and in the process we have created a great collaborative group. Rather than being cumbersome, I feel like this approach actually frees us up to be really creative since it takes the onus off of one person and gives everyone a sounding board to try out ideas and really be creative. I can think of a few post ideas I have had that my inner voice was telling me were on the edge of being bad ideas. Left to my own I may not have posted, but by vetting through the group we ended up posting and got great responses. The group approach also helps keep the momentum up -- if one staff person is out, or just busy, the others can keep it going. Another tip may be to have some editorial staff involved in the group. Our Facebook group has 2 editors involved, myself included. Editors will know the official terminology and editorial style for your institution and can help shape the tone for the social media (hopefully very different from your "official" tone!). Hope this helps susan Susan Edwards Sr. Writer/Editor, Web Group J. Have you heard of Twitoaster? I just read about it this morning in David Pogue's "Personal Tech" column: Twitoaster.com... bestows Twitter with something that it otherwise lacks: threading. In other words, it groups replies with the tweets that inspired them. It's also filled with analysis tools, showing, for a particular Twitter member, how many replies he or she is generating, how various Twitterers rank, and... what day of the week, or time of day, seems to produce the most replies. (There's a handy visual instruction sheet at http://twitoaster.com/quick-guide) Better yet, Twitoaster holds onto your tweets and replies forever, which is a lot longer than Twitter does. The tasks of web updates and social media fall under the Marketing Department. Many of the museums and institutions in Dallas/Fort Worth work similarly - we've established a group to collaborate on social media and it's mainly made up of marketing/PR staffers. -Alyssa Gardina Marketing Associate The Women's Museum www.alyssagardina.com @agardina On Aug 31, 2009, at 12:37 PM, TAMSEN SCHWARTZMAN wrote: > Hello all, > > For those of you who work in smaller museums without big IT > departments, in what department does the person who updates the > website and handles social media work? > > -- > Tamsen Schwartzman > Museum Media Manager > The Museum at FIT, Room E116 > Seventh Avenue at 27th Street > New York, NY 10001 > 212~217~4547 ** 212~217~4561 fax > www.fitnyc.edu/museum > Visit our collections online at fashionmuseum.fitnyc.edu > > Find us on Facebook > > Follow us on Twitter @MuseumFIT > > Closes September 26: Isabel Toledo: Fashion from the Inside Out > > Closes November 7: Fashion and Politics > > _______________________________________________ > You are currently subscribed to mcn-l, the listserv of the Museum > Computer Network (http://www.mcn.edu) > > To post to this list, send messages to: mcn-l at mcn.edu > > To unsubscribe or change mcn-l delivery options visit: > http://toronto.mediatrope.com/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l > > The MCN-L archives can be found at: > http://toronto.mediatrope.com/pipermail/mcn-l/ From khamma at me.com Mon Aug 31 11:19:24 2009 From: khamma at me.com (Kenneth Hamma) Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2009 11:19:24 -0700 Subject: [MCN-L] ConservationSpace Update 8-2009 Message-ID: <3DD748DF-2052-460C-86E3-AADE59B4310E@me.com> Museum & Conservation Community, Revised workflow diagrams have been posted to the discussion of ConservationSpace - thanks to engagement of a large number of conservators posting corrections and additions over the last months. The new diagrams can be found as Version 2 at the very beginning of each activity page at www.conservationspace.org/blog. They have also been added as the final page in the PDF package of documents for each activity. In addition to incorporating you comments, these revised workflow diagrams have been moved one more step toward a design for software development by being recast in BPMN - Business Process Modeling Notation. You will still easily recognize them, but the BPMN adds a consistency that makes them more useful for software developers. Within each diagram you will also find the related documents, associated with that sequence of workflow. Most of these were mentioned in the New York and London community design meetings, but many are the result of emails and blog postings over the last several months. Many conservators have asked during this review process why this design effort is based on process and workflow, with documents following along in a secondary capacity. The most important benefit of this process-centric approach over document-centric alternatives is that it renders explicit a large body of tacit knowledge about how different organizations produce the same document. This knowledge is relatively unimportant within any single institution; indeed, it may even seem banal once it is made explicit, precisely because it is so deeply embedded into the institution?s own practices. However, that knowledge becomes critical when one is trying to build software to serve multiple institutions, because it turns out that different institutions often proceed in very different ways to produce even identical documents. The failure to recognize this difference in tacit knowledge and practices is one of the chief reasons for the frequent failure of software built in one institution to thrive in another. If you would like to know more about business process modeling and the use of BPM for software development, let me point you to two resources: For an easy online overview, search BPMN at Wikipedia in lots of languages. If this engenders a real fascination, go get BPM Basics for Dummies (yes it?s free!) in English, Spanish, Japanese, French and German online from a German company, Software AG . What happens next? Comments and additional posts at conservationspace.org/blog are always welcome, as are emails directly back to the core team members. At the same time, the core team will be wrapping up this design phase by December 2009, with a final report to accompany the design documents and with an exploration of avenues for application development. Everything will be posted at conservationspace.org/blog. ken Kenneth Hamma +1 310 270 8008 khamma at me.com 368 Patel Place Palm Springs CA 92264 From gerrymck at iastate.edu Mon Aug 31 12:05:42 2009 From: gerrymck at iastate.edu (McKiernan, Gerard [LIB]) Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2009 14:05:42 -0500 Subject: [MCN-L] News Additions to The _Mobile Libraries_ Blog | 08/24 - 08/31/09 In-Reply-To: <4F6D7F02E570D846825FD3A8B8C252650158FEFA@exchs018.its.iastate.edu> References: <4F6D7F02E570D846825FD3A8B8C252650158FEF9@exchs018.its.iastate.edu> <4F6D7F02E570D846825FD3A8B8C252650158FEFA@exchs018.its.iastate.edu> Message-ID: <4F6D7F02E570D846825FD3A8B8C252650158FF02@exchs018.its.iastate.edu> Colleagues/ I am pleased to announce the addition of several major postings to the _Mobile Libraries_ blog /Gerry >>> PicPocket Books: Children's Books For The iPhone http://tinyurl.com/mwk449 >>> Handheld Learning (Organization) http://tinyurl.com/kra7qy >>> MoLeNET: The Mobile Learning Network http://tinyurl.com/lhgusb >>> The London Mobile Learning Group http://tinyurl.com/ntwvfp >>> Using PDAs In Libraries http://tinyurl.com/m9kvcd >>> emtacl10: Emerging Technologies In Academic Libraries | Trondheim, Norway | April 26-28 2009 http://tinyurl.com/lqzzau >>> JISC/MLA > An Introduction To QR Codes http://tinyurl.com/mjovl6 >>> JISC/MLA > Further Uses for the Mobile Web http://tinyurl.com/nhfu24 >>> Google Book Search for iPhone and Android http://tinyurl.com/nl7ms6 >>> A Million Google Books In Open EPUB Format http://tinyurl.com/n993b4 >>> International Children's Digital Library Launches Apple iPhone Application http://tinyurl.com/lc8njo >>> The Surprise > First Children's Picture Book From Winged Chariot Press For An iPhone http://tinyurl.com/lde69c >>> Library Finder Brings eBooks For Your Sony Reader http://tinyurl.com/nkhegy >>> Using Mobile Technologies To Promote Children's Learning http://tinyurl.com/kj9okf >>> Emerging Mobile Technologies for K-12 Classrooms Chat | September 3 2009 | 11 AM Eastern | http://tinyurl.com/lukyw3 >>> QandANJ Launches A Text Reference Pilot! http://tinyurl.com/nwurte >>> Sony Announces Reader Daily Edition: 3G Wireless, Plus Free Library Content http://tinyurl.com/ljdedr >>> Mobile Technology in South Korean Libraries http://tinyurl.com/n4mvud Happy Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday eNJoy /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Associate Professor Science and Technology Librarian Iowa State University Library Ames IA 50011 gerrymck at iastate.edu There Are No Answers, Only Solutions / Olde Irish Saying The Future Is Already Here, It's Just Not Evenly Distributed / Attributed To William Gibson, SciFi Author / Coined 'Cyberspace From ACarrier at MarinersMuseum.org Mon Aug 31 12:50:47 2009 From: ACarrier at MarinersMuseum.org (Adam Carrier) Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2009 15:50:47 -0400 Subject: [MCN-L] In what department does your media person reside?
